Honor and Duty: The Chinese American WWII Veterans Book

In Honor And Duty: The Chinese American WWII Veterans (published by Heritage Series LLC, release April 2020) E. Samantha Cheng compiles a thorough historical record that recognizes the service and sacrifice of Chinese American veterans who contributed to America’s wartime needs. The data collected and compiled for this book will serve as an indispensable source of information for family members, historians and scholars alike. This book is inspired by the DVD 3-part series, Honor and Duty: The Mississippi Delta Chinese.

Following the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, it is a well-known fact that the US government sent residents of Japanese descent to internment camps while other Asian Americans, including approximately 18,000 Chinese Americans, nearly 20% of the Chinese American population at that time, served honorably in every branch of the United States Armed Services.

These veterans were finally recognized and honored for their service when President Trump signed into law “The Chinese American World War II Veteran Congressional Gold Medal Act” on December 20, 2018, three days after the 75th anniversary of repealing the 1882 “Chinese Exclusion Act”.

Including a Foreword by Fang Wong, former National Commander of the American Legion,  Honor And Duty: The Chinese American WWII Veterans is divided into three sections:

Section One:

  • Overview of the Chinese American WWII Veterans Recognition Project

  • Overview of the Congressional Gold Medal Act

  • Methodologies of the Data Acquisition and the Service Verification Process

  • Acknowledgements

Book Reviews

Movies, TV shows and history textbooks tend to leave out information of minority groups’ importance in U.S. history. Honor and Duty is an amazing tribute which provides overdue recognition to not just the 18,0000 forgotten, but mostly unheard of Chinese and Chinese American veterans who fought for the United States in World War II.
— Terry Cherry, past President of the National Council for the Social Studies
Recognition of the honorable military service by Chinese American WWII Veterans at a time when they faced great discrimination in the United States is well deserved and long overdue
— Stephen Tom, Major General, U.S. Army (Retired)
This book documents the vital quest of Chinese Americans to demonstrate their belonging and commitment to public service in the U.S. even as they were legally excluded from important aspects of American life.
— Janelle Wong, Professor of Asian American Studies, University of Maryland, College Park
